"Advanced NDT: Outperforming the Competition in Pipeline Inspection"

Welcome to this week's Tech Tuesday! In the competitive field of non-destructive testing, accuracy is paramount. At Advanced NDT, we recently completed a project comparing tool findings to NDE findings using cut-out pipeline samples. This effort not only demonstrated our precision but also reinforced the reliability of our methods.


The Challenge:

The project involved inspecting cut-out samples from an aging pipeline, originally installed in the 1960s. The goal was to compare the tool-based findings with NDE results to ensure accuracy and reliability in defect detection.


Our Approach:

To tackle this, we leveraged the latest technology and the expertise of our team. Here's how we made it happen:

  • Cutting-Edge Techniques: We used phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) and total focusing method (TFM) to enhance detection capabilities. These methods allowed us to see more clearly and detect anomalies that might be missed with traditional techniques.

  • Expert Analysis: Our team didn't just collect data—they interpreted it with precision. By understanding the intricacies of the samples' condition, we provided actionable insights that were crucial to the case study.


Detailed Findings:

The image below illustrates the precision of Advanced NDT's findings compared to others. Our analysis revealed specific measurements for defects such as undertrim and hook cracks, showcasing our ability to detect and accurately size anomalies.


For example, in Sample B, we identified a hook crack with a depth of 0.025 inches, closely aligning with the metallurgical findings of 0.024 inches. This alignment demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of our methods, providing confidence in the integrity of our inspections.


Comparison with Competitors:

One of the key differentiators was our ability to detect and accurately size defects that others missed. Competitors often reported vague findings, while our detailed analysis provided exact dimensions and locations of anomalies.
